India’s defence exports may see a significant boost as Brazil has shown a strong interest in acquiring the indigenous Akash air defence missile system, along with other military platforms. The development comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro from July 5 to 8.

Brazil’s interest in the Akash system follows its notable performance during Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces effectively countered a coordinated aerial assault involving drones and missiles from Pakistan. The Akash system, integrated into India’s AI-enabled Akashteer and the broader Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), intercepted incoming threats with precision, safeguarding vital infrastructure.

Defence cooperation is expected to be a key agenda during bilateral discussions between the two nations. Brazil is reportedly exploring collaborations involving secure battlefield communication systems, coastal surveillance platforms, offshore patrol vessels, Garuda artillery guns, and maintenance support for Scorpene-class submarines. Joint production opportunities, leveraging Brazil’s aerospace capabilities through Embraer, are also under consideration.

Brazil’s potential partnership in co-producing advanced Indian defence technologies reflects growing confidence in India’s indigenous systems and supports New Delhi’s ambition to become a global defence exporter. The upcoming summit is poised to deepen strategic ties and open new avenues for defence and technological collaboration.
