  • Suspended MLAs were reportedly facing financial strain

In a significant political development, the suspension of 18 BJP MLAs from the Karnataka Assembly is likely to be withdrawn. The suspension, imposed by Speaker U.T. Khader for alleged indiscipline during the last budget session, was initially for six months. However, recent talks led by Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok have led to a possible reversal.

A high-level meeting chaired by Speaker Khader discussed the matter, following R. Ashok’s persistent efforts and discussions with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Law Minister H.K. Patil. Although an official order is awaited, R. Ashok stated that Speaker Khader is expected to issue it before leaving for Haj pilgrimage tomorrow.

Ashok emphasized that both ruling and opposition parties are essential for legislative proceedings. “Six months’ suspension is excessive. Our MLAs have expressed regret. The CM and Speaker feel this matter should end now,” he said.

The suspended MLAs were reportedly facing financial strain due to loss of travel allowance and daily allowances. Ashok conveyed this to the Speaker, further strengthening the appeal for revocation.

The Speaker had earlier said the decision was taken in consultation with the government. With the Siddaramaiah-led administration marking two years, continuing the suspension could prove politically embarrassing.

A positive response from the government has paved the way for withdrawal, with an official announcement expected soon.
