BWSSB and World Bank to roll out ₹1,323 crore wastewater project in Bengaluru

In a major step toward improving urban water infrastructure, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), in partnership with the World Bank, is set to roll out a ₹1,323.46 crore wastewater management project in Bengaluru. The initiative aims to enhance the city’s sewage treatment capacity, reduce flood risks, and promote water reuse to combat long-term water scarcity.

The multi-phase project includes the construction of nine sewage treatment plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 140 million litres per day (MLD), a 415-kilometre sewer network, and several intermediate pumping stations across key areas of the city. These upgrades are designed to streamline wastewater treatment and ensure effective disposal and reuse.

One of the primary goals of the initiative is to recycle treated wastewater for non-potable purposes such as irrigation, thereby contributing to groundwater recharge. This approach supports sustainable water practices while easing pressure on Bengaluru's overburdened freshwater sources.

The total investment includes ₹1,115 crore allocated for capital works and ₹208.46 crore earmarked for operations and maintenance. BWSSB will contribute a portion of the funding, while the remaining financial support will come from the World Bank.

Planned over a five-year horizon, the project is part of a broader vision to strengthen the city’s resilience against urban flooding and secure water availability for the future through sustainable wastewater solutions.
