The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has become the first utility in India to receive the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for piped drinking water supply management. The certification, introduced in late 2024, was granted to BWSSB under the "IS 17482:2020" standards and will remain valid for three years, from March 6, 2025, to March 5, 2028.

This recognition underscores BWSSB’s commitment to providing safe and high-quality drinking water to Bengaluru residents. The certification covers the board’s end-to-end water management processes, including water intake, treatment, storage, pumping, distribution, maintenance, metering, and billing. It also acknowledges compliance with sustainable water resource management and regulatory standards, ensuring that drinking water quality meets IS 10500 norms.
The BIS assessment involved multiple stages, including site visits, sample collection, and quality audits. The water samples tested met all required safety parameters, reinforcing BWSSB’s adherence to stringent protocols. Additionally, the board’s documentation on water quality procedures and testing methods underwent rigorous scrutiny by BIS officials.
To maintain certification, BWSSB will undergo periodic surveillance audits, scheduled for December 2025 and September 2026, with a renewal audit planned for November 2027. The certification reinforces Bengaluru’s commitment to urban sustainability and high public service standards, ensuring continued access to clean and safe drinking water for residents.
