Bengaluru’s water utility body, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), has earned global recognition after securing a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. This feat was achieved through an extensive water conservation campaign conducted between March 21 and 28, 2025.

A record-breaking total of 5,33,642 individuals pledged to conserve water during the week-long initiative, setting a new benchmark for participation in such campaigns. The recognition was formalized at an event in Bengaluru, where the official Guinness certificate was presented to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar by Guinness adjudicator Swapnil Dangarikar.
The campaign aimed to boost public awareness about the importance of preserving water resources, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions like Bengaluru. Authorities emphasized the need for responsible water use, highlighting ongoing efforts to reuse treated water for non-potable purposes and reduce dependency on freshwater sources.
Despite facing challenges such as widespread non-payment of water bills—affecting nearly 35% of consumers—BWSSB continues to supply water consistently. Officials have indicated that steps are underway to revamp the city’s water infrastructure, with the goal of extending reliable water access to two crore residents.
In a bid to reduce annual losses amounting to ₹400–500 crore, the state government is also planning a revision of water tariffs. The proposed model will follow a usage-based structure, similar to pricing in public transportation systems.
