Building on the success of replenishing 14 dry lakes with treated wastewater in 2024, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) now plans to extend the initiative to over 30 lakes across Bengaluru. The move aims to combat the city's persistent water crisis by utilizing treated sewage water from apartment complexes.

Despite earlier challenges in diverting treated water for industrial use, BWSSB is set to lay dedicated pipelines from apartment complexes to nearby lakes. Tenders have already been issued in the southern zone, including a ₹1 crore project to channel water from Splendid Lake Breez apartments to Begur Lake. Additionally, ₹1.7 crore has been allocated to connect Prestige Casabella and Elite Greenwoods apartments with Chikkathogur Lake and Yelenahalli-BTM Residency Lake.
Officials emphasize that restoring lakes will help recharge groundwater and create a sustainable urban ecosystem. Mahadevapura, facing severe groundwater depletion, is a key focus area, with 16 lakes identified for rejuvenation.
BWSSB will monitor water quality daily to ensure safety. Only apartment complexes within a 3-4 km radius of lakes will be included to minimize costs. The Bangalore Apartments' Federation (BAF) has pledged support, highlighting the availability of 500-600 MLD of treated water daily and the need for permanent infrastructure to sustain this initiative year-round.
This large-scale effort marks a significant step in Bengaluru’s water conservation strategy.
