The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has garnered national recognition under the Jal Hi Amrit Scheme for its outstanding sewage treatment plants (STPs), earning  Rs 103 crore in incentives. Additionally, the Union government awarded 23 of its STPs a prestigious five-star rating under the Clean Water Credit initiative. BWSSB operates 34 STPs, treating about 1450 MLD of wastewater daily. Bengaluru has been ranked as the top city in Asia for reusing treated water in lake rejuvenation projects around the city.

The Jal Hi Amrit Scheme evaluates sewage treatment plants across India, rewarding those with high treatment standards. BWSSB’s incentive grant is the third largest in the country, following  Gujarat and Maharashtra. Out of the 30 STPs assessed, 23 received five stars, 6 earned four stars and 1 received three stars . 

Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar expressed pride in this achievement, emphasizing that the “Brand Bengaluru” initiative aims to make the city a model of sustainability and urban innovation. He highlighted the city’s commitment to top-notch sewage treatment through advanced technology. 

BWSSB chairman Ram Prasath Manohar shared that the board has always maintained international standards for the sewage treatment. As the leader in Asia for treated water reuse, the BWSSB plans to invest the incentive funds to further modernize and improve its STPs and water treatment infrastructure.
