In a significant development, the Karnataka cabinet recently approved the reclassification of areas under the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) jurisdiction as the Greater Bengaluru Region, with the Greater Bengaluru Administration Act set to take effect from May 15.
Under this Act, the existing BBMP will be reorganized, potentially forming up to seven separate municipal corporations to streamline governance. The final structure will be confirmed once rules are framed.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar hinted at the inclusion of Anekal taluk within this expanded region. Addressing a public function in Anekal on May 3, he said discussions with local MLAs were underway regarding its inclusion.
The Act also proposes relaxed regulations for building construction, with BBMP officials stating that floor area ratios could see a 50% reduction for residential and 25% for commercial structures. However, concerns about safety and regularization have emerged, with only the commissioner empowered to approve rule violations. Collected fines will be used for infrastructure development.
Additionally, stricter enforcement of civic rules is expected, including a fine of ₹2 lakh and up to six months’ jail for littering or violating BBMP’s waste management norms.
The cabinet also approved 75% of the ₹79.67 crore sought by the Bangalore Development Authority for Bellandur Lake’s restoration. It also cleared a ₹280 crore project to fill 41 lakes in Nelamangala and Doddaballapura with treated water under a World Bank-assisted scheme.
