Former CFO and Board Member at the Infosys and the current Chairperson of the Manipal Global Education Mohandas Pai has stoked a controversy on Twitter by drawing comparisons between Hyderabad and Bengaluru with regard to suitability for investment by Information Technology (IT) firms. “Will Hyderabad Dethrone Bangalore’s IT Status? continued neglect of Bengaluru by successive govts over the last 10 years has led  to this. Hope govt shows more energy to improve the city,” he posted on the micro blogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

He also shared an article that pointed to the recent setting up of Google’s office in Hyderabad and the increase in IT jobs as an indication of the city’s potential to overtake Bengaluru’s stature at a global stage. Certain users pointed to his earlier post in May wherein he had questioned Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram from the Indian National Congress, Shashi Tharoor for his claims with regard to plummeting IT investment in Bengaluru ahead of the elections. “IT Investment Plummeting In Karnataka: Shashi Tharoor Slams BJP Govt. IT investment in Bengaluru has not come down! Do you have data to prove your point? Please stop lying and abusing our city. Show us data,” the post mentioned.
