Renowned actor of the Tamil Film Industry (Kollywood) (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) DMDK Chief Captain Vijayakanth passed away at the age of 71 in the early hours of 28th December after having tested positive for the Covid-19 infection and subsequently hinging on ventilator support. He is survived by his wife Premalatha and 2 wards Shanmuga Pandian and Vijaya Prabhakaran. His health has been deteriorating ever since 2017 as he has faced prolonged illness, organ transplant and has had his toes amputated owing to diabetes.

He had an acting career that spanned across a period of 5 decades winning him fans from across the globe and a political career that lasted for 18 years.

Condolences have poured in from all corners of India at this unfortunate development. “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers.
