I'd personally like to see a commitment to culture & art: Sona

For supporters of all political formations, the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections threw surprises. Singer Sona Mohapatra expressed mixed feelings at what the mandate represented. “For all the fascism hoo-haa  in some of our own circles & reflected in the western media, truth: Democracy, People, India reigned supreme. That caste politics won over all else in UP is heartbreaking & I say this with a heavy heart as an artist who has experienced so many positive changes while travelling the landscape of the interiors of this state over the last 10 years; infrastructure, safety, women’s rights,” Sona said on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Sona also talked about her expectations from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government that will take stage. “I’d personally like to see a commitment to culture & art by a) separating the culture & tourism ministries, giving the former some teeth & actual budgets. b) building live venues for music & bringing down entertainment taxes. c) fostering a sense of community, better mental health, & also identity by presenting all genres of the performing arts; Folk , fusion, Bollywood, Bhakti , Sufi , the soft power & returns of which are huge albeit difficult to measure via standard metrics,” Sona mentioned.
