In a rare and significant development, Karnataka has released over 100 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu during June and July, a figure that surpasses historical records for this period.

This release is far higher than the Supreme Court’s mandated quota of 177.25 TMC per year. Karnataka was expected to release just 9 TMC in June and 31 TMC in July, totaling 40 TMC. However, due to heavy inflow into KRS and Kabini reservoirs, the state ended up releasing 60 TMC more than required, bringing the two-month total to 100 TMC.
This marks the first time such a large volume of water has been released in just two months, with 56% of the annual quota already met by July. The release has been attributed to both reservoirs reaching full capacity, prompting authorities to discharge excess water directly into the Cauvery river.
As the flow continues strongly into Tamil Nadu, hopes rise that the state will not face any water scarcity-related disputes this year, bringing temporary relief in what is usually a tense inter-state water sharing issue.
