The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially stepped into the high-profile gold smuggling case involving Ranya Rao, marking a significant escalation in the probe. An FIR has been registered, though details remain undisclosed. The focus is now on unearthing the broader network behind Ranya, who was intercepted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) with 14.2 kg of gold upon arrival from Dubai.

Investigators are set to scrutinize potential links between government officials and smuggling syndicates. Key aspects under review include how Ranya evaded Customs scrutiny despite frequent travel, the source of police protocol services extended to her, and whether any influential figures were in direct contact with her.

CBI will analyze data extracted from Ranya’s mobile phone and laptop, along with her travel history and Customs duty rosters at Kempegowda International Airport to assess possible insider involvement. Additionally, the role of police protocol personnel, who routinely escorted her out of the terminal, is under examination. One such official reportedly followed instructions to receive her but denied knowledge of any smuggling activities.

Despite deliberations at the highest level, the state government has opted against an independent inquiry. Senior police officials dismissed any political involvement, attributing the protocol services to orders from an IPS officer. They maintain that police assistance was provided only after immigration and Customs clearance, shifting focus away from law enforcement agencies.
