  • CBSE to hold Class 10 board exams twice a year starting 2026
  • First exam in February is mandatory; second in May is optional for improvement
  • Students can improve marks in up to three subjects like science, math, or languages

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to implement a major change in its examination system by allowing Class 10 students to appear for board exams twice in an academic year starting from 2026. This new structure aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), which emphasizes reducing exam-related stress and offering students more flexibility.

Under the revised system, the board exams will be conducted in two phases. The first exam will be held in February and will be mandatory for all students. The second exam, scheduled for May, will be optional and intended for students who wish to improve their scores. This approach is designed to provide a fair opportunity to students to enhance their performance without having to repeat the entire academic year.

The results for the February exam will be declared in April, while the results of the May exam will be announced in June. Students will be given the option to improve their scores in up to three subjects out of key areas such as science, mathematics, social science, and languages.

By offering two attempts in a single academic year, the CBSE aims to create a more student-friendly examination environment. The move is also expected to reduce pressure on students, encourage continuous learning, and help them better demonstrate their academic potential.
