As Diwali approaches and shoppers gear up for gift-buying, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has released an advisory to help people avoid common online scams targeting holiday buyers. CERT-In highlights several prevalent scams, including phishing attacks, where fraudsters send fake messages imitating trusted brands to steal users’ credentials. Shoppers are also warned against lottery and prize scams, in which they may be tricked into paying fees for prizes they never won. Emotional manipulation scams are also on the rise, with fake online dating profiles attempting to solicit funds under the guise of personal emergencies.

Other scams include job fraud, where fake job offers demand fees for applications or training, and tech support scams, where scammers pretend to fix non-existent device issues to steal data. Investment scams, offering unrealistic returns, target those looking for quick financial gain, while Cash-on-Delivery (CoD) scams involve fake stores delivering incorrect items.

CERT-In also warns of fake charity appeals, using crisis situations to solicit donations, and digital arrest scams, where scammers threaten victims with false legal charges unless they pay up. CERT-In’s advisory urges caution and vigilance to ensure a secure and scam-free holiday shopping season.
