  • CMRL has published a tender for conduct surveys
  • Karnataka government wants to expand metro network up to 452 kilometers
  • TN government had approached the railway ministry with a proposal last year

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has published a tender to select a consultancy firm that would conduct surveys to ascertain the possibility of extending the yellow of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) from Bommasandra to Hosur.

Hosur is 20 kilometers away from Bommasandra. As of the moment inter state connectivity provided by metro is restricted only to the NCR (National Capital Region). The DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) extends to regions of Uttar Pradesh such as Noida and Ghaziabad and regions of Haryana such as Faridabad and Gurugram.

The Karnataka government is equally keen to expand the network up to 452 kilometers which also includes Hosur. The TN government had approached the railway ministry with a proposal to carry out the feasibility study last year.

Meanwhile, some citizens were not fully on board with the proposal. It was pointed out that connectivity via railways is already in place between Hosur and Bengaluru and that Hosur region is not as densly populated as Bengaluru either. Some said that many regions close to Bengaluru such as Anekal, Hoskote, Nelamangala, Magadi and Bidadi could also benefit from metro connectivity.

A Chellakumar, MP (Minister of Parliament) from Krishnagiri from the INC (Indian National Congress) said, "Expansion of the network will benefit both the states. Thousands of people from Karnataka are working at industrial hubs in Hosur and people from TN also commute to Electronics City, Attibele and other areas for work. Every day, thousands of students travel and pursue their studies in border areas. People also visit Bengaluru from Krishnagiri district for medical treatment. Implementation of the project will help the general public in a big way." as quoted by The Times of India.
