  • The incentive is for brides below 25 years of age
  • Announcement was made on Wechat
  • The incentive is only for first marriages

The Changsha county of eastern China is looking for ways to incentivise population growth and has made an announcement on its official Wechat account in regard to this. Brides who are 25 or younger are set to receive 1000 Yuan for their first marriage. Other subsidies pertaining to education, child care and fertility are also being provided.

China had been following a one-child policy for decades and that resulted in a decline in population growth rate in certain regions over the past few years. There has also been a decline in marriage rates with a large portion of the population gaining financial independence. In 2022, China recorded a 36-year low in terms of marriage rates and saw a decline of 8 lakh in comparison to the previous year.

It is being reported that the cost of child rearing and the lack of support for single mothers in this regard are potential factors detracting people from pursuing this end. China’s fertility rate are currently amongst the lowest in the world.
