Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives and left 33 others injured. The incident occurred during a celebratory event where crowds far exceeded expectations.
Addressing the media, CM Siddaramaiah said, “This is an unexpected tragedy. The government expresses deep sorrow and prays for the souls of those who lost their lives. May their families find the strength to bear this loss.”

The Chief Minister visited Vydehi and Bowring hospitals to meet the injured. He noted that while the event in front of the Vidhana Soudha — which drew over one lakh people — passed without incident, the stampede took place at Chinnaswamy Stadium, where capacity constraints led to chaos.
“The stadium can hold around 35,000 people, but two to three lakh people turned up. None of us expected such a massive turnout,” he said, hinting at possible lapses. “There may have been a security failure. If so, action will be taken.”
Siddaramaiah confirmed that all injured persons would receive full medical treatment at government expense. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, with the District Magistrate tasked to investigate the incident and submit a report. “Action will be taken against those found guilty,” he assured.
He also mourned the loss of many young men, women, and students, calling the tragedy “deeply painful and avoidable.”
