Sanganna Bassappa and his family were enroute Chikkamagaluru from Vijayapura on a tour. His relative Eeranna along with his family were also set to join him but they were coming from a different car. Overspeeding is suspected to have occurred on the National Highway 13 as the Tata Nixon he was driving crashed onto a lorry parked at the extreme left end of the road.

Sanganna Basappa (36), his wife Rekha (29), their son Agastya (7), their relative Bhima Shankar (26) and a family friend Madhusudhan (24) had lost their lives on the spot. Their other 2 wards, Adarsh (3) and Anvika (5) and another 26-year-old man who was travelling with them have been grievously injured and shifted to the Chitradurga District Hospital.

The truck was enroute Bengaluru from Hosapete. Superintendent of Police for Chitradurga, K Parashurama has maintained that the fault was not of the truck driver who had parked his vehicle well within the truck lane.

Alok Kumar (Additional Director General of Police, Traffic and Safety, Bengaluru) referred to this as a ‘Black Saturday’ as 37 deaths had occurred across the state in 24 hours.
