Without fixing the key problems that face the city, a branding exercise can be an expensive exercise in futility: Citizens' Action Forum
The forum directed attention towards pressing issues such as timely clearance of garbage
Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka DK Shivakumar had invited suggestions from citizens in relation to “Brand Bengaluru”. Citizens Action Forum, a group formed in 2007 responded to this call and wrote a letter to DK Shivakumar. They highlighted that a branding exercise consisting of empty platitudes does not swerve long term needs. “At a fundamental level, the concept of a brand is synonymous with its intrinsic values. The “brand” speaks the truth about itself. No amount of window dressing or attempts to project an untruth will work on a sustainable basis unless fundamental changes are brought to bear on how the city functions and what it offers. Without fixing the key problems that face the city, a branding exercise can be an expensive exercise in futility. Attempting to fix an image without fixing the underlying issues would be at best a temporary method of placating the residents and trying to entice new investments,” the letter mentioned.
The forum directed attention towards pressing issues such as timely clearance of garbage, regular supply of water in the peripheral regions of the city, the monitoring of building bylaws and zoning laws, the maintenance and scaling up of projects pertaining to public infrastructure and prevention of pollution in lakes. “Implement the ‘Constitutional’ method of city planning sincerely, which has at its core, the concept of devolution of power. We have organisations with rules and laws to run the city. Let us make the administration truly and legally accountable,” the forum stated on X(formerly known as Twitter).
