A large-scale civil defence mock drill is scheduled for Thursday, May 29, across Indian states bordering Pakistan—namely Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir. The exercise, coordinated by the Directorate of Civil Defence, aims to bolster preparedness and coordination in the event of emergencies or security threats in sensitive border areas.

The upcoming drill gains significance against the backdrop of recent security developments. It follows India’s retaliatory action, ‘Operation Sindoor’, carried out during the night of May 6–7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. That attack, which occurred on April 22, claimed the lives of 26 tourists and raised national concerns over border security and counterterrorism readiness.
Earlier this month, the Ministry of Home Affairs had also conducted a nationwide mock drill—Operation Abhyas—on May 7, indicating a series of layered preparedness activities unfolding at both national and regional levels. These exercises appear part of a broader strategy to enhance rapid response mechanisms in high-risk zones, especially along international borders.
Ahead of the May 29 operation, mock drills have already been carried out in other parts of the country, including a recent one at the Reserve Police Lines in Lucknow. These initiatives underscore the government’s increased focus on strengthening civil defence capabilities amid rising regional tensions and evolving security challenges.
