Bengaluru’s efforts to tackle climate change have received a major boost as educational institutions across the city embrace the Climate Action Club initiative launched by the BBMP’s Climate Action Cell. In under a month, 725 schools and colleges have registered to establish these clubs, reflecting a strong citywide commitment to environmental sustainability.

Government, private, and aided schools make up the bulk of the participation, with 501 applications. The Bengaluru South zone leads the movement with 293 schools showing interest. Of the total registrations, 46 clubs are already operational and actively working on climate action plans.
Each Climate Action Club comprises one teacher and ten students who choose from a pool of 269 climate mitigation activities tailored to local needs. Clubs are tasked with assessing their campus’s environmental footprint—monitoring metrics such as water use, electricity consumption, and waste generation—to draft targeted action plans for reduction.
A dedicated portal has been launched for institutions to register and list coordinators. An additional portal for teachers is in development to streamline coordination and support.
Officials credit the overwhelming response to focused outreach programs and alignment with existing eco-friendly initiatives in schools. The initiative not only fosters environmental awareness but also integrates sustainable practices into academic life, positioning students as agents of change in Bengaluru’s climate resilience efforts.
With administrative backing and growing participation, the program is poised to become a cornerstone of the city’s grassroots climate strategy.
