Bengaluru’s metro expansion is set to progress as the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will inspect the first driverless train for the Yellow Line on February 24. The train, which arrived from China, marks a crucial step in operationalizing the long-awaited 19.15-km corridor between R.V. Road and Bommasandra via Electronic City.

Simultaneously, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has coupled six domestically manufactured coaches to form the second driverless train at Hebbagodi depot. This follows the Railway Design and Standards Organisation’s (RDSO) clearance of the train design on January 21. Given that the trains operate on Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, RDSO approval was a necessary step.
Metro officials indicated that an updated version of the Automatic Train Control Software is expected on February 28, enabling further testing. The signalling static tests are ongoing, with dynamic tests set to begin once the software is received. Multiple train trials are scheduled for mid-March, followed by third-party certification by an Independent Safety Assessor.
CMRS is expected to conduct a full Yellow Line inspection by late March, and final approval could come in April. Meanwhile, the third driverless train, manufactured at Titagarh, is set to arrive in Bengaluru by early April.
With these developments, Bengaluru Metro moves closer to launching its first driverless operations, enhancing connectivity in the city’s tech corridor.
