  • UCC aims at equality and uniformity

It’s history in India as the Uttarakhand Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as it becomes the first state in the country to have it.

The UCC concerns itself with marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships. Even as it was passed, the Opposition sought it be referred to a select committee, but the Assembly passed it.

After its passage, Chief Minister Dhami said, "This law is of equality, uniformity and equal rights. There were many doubts regarding this but the two-day discussion in the Assembly clarified everything. This law is not against anyone. It is for women who have to face difficulty because of the social norms. This will strengthen their self-confidence. This law is for the holistic development of women. The bill is passed. We will send it to the President. We will implement it in the state as a law, as soon as the President signs it.”

It can be noted that the framers of the Constitution had stopped short of making UCC a law but had included it in the directive principles of state policy (Article 44).

The BJP had made the UCC a promise in its election manifesto as well.
