Karnataka Assembly's decision to create a new post "Secretary 2"

This move has ignited controversy and allegations of nepotism

Shashidhar JE, son-in-law of Minister KH Muniyappa was given this post

The Karnataka Assembly’s recent decision to create a new post titled “Secretary 2” has ignited controversy and allegations of nepotism, following the appointment of Shashidhar JE, son-in-law of Minister KH Muniyappa, to the position.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, who accuse the ruling government of misusing public resources. Sources reveal that the new role was established following a letter from the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly to the Assembly’s Finance Department, requesting the creation and financial approval of the position.

In response, the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha Assembly Employee Association has voiced its dissent, alleging that the position was fabricated to benefit Shashidhar JE. In a letter to the Vidhan Sabha Assembly secretary, the association highlighted that Shashidhar, husband of MLA M Roopakala and currently part of the computer wing, is unqualified for the secretary role based on traditional promotion practices.

“A new post called ‘Secretary 2’ is being created to accommodate Minister KH Muniyappa’s son-in-law, Sashidhar,” the letter stated. “The secretary post is typically reserved for employees who advance through the ranks. Computer wing employees do not traditionally become secretaries.”

The controversy has underscored procedural concerns, as the Secretary of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly holds significant powers, privileges, and status akin to a secretary to the Government in the Secretariat.

The BJP has vehemently criticized the government for what it perceives as blatant nepotism. Minister Muniyappa has refrained from commenting on the unfolding situation.
