  • Karnataka reports 33 new COVID-19 cases in May, highest this year
  • New variant JN.1 detected globally; feared to be behind recent surge
  • Health officials advise vigilance and basic precautions

After months of minimal COVID-19 activity, Karnataka is witnessing a concerning resurgence in cases, prompting health authorities to issue precautionary alerts. As of May, 33 new COVID-19 cases have already been recorded, a significant increase compared to the single-digit monthly cases seen earlier this year.

Data shows only 3 cases in January, 1 in February, and 3 each in March and April. The sudden jump in May ,with the month yet to end, is being linked to a newly emerging variant known as JN.1, which has already been detected in countries like Singapore and Hong Kong. Health experts fear that this variant could be more transmissible and may evade existing immunity to some extent, although studies are still underway.

Adding to the concern, a 9-month-old baby from Hoskote tested positive for COVID-19 at Vanivilas Hospital in Bengaluru. The child is under close observation by pediatric specialists. This case underscores the renewed vulnerability of infants and elderly citizens, who remain at higher risk during variant-driven waves.

While hospitalizations and severe cases remain low, the Karnataka health department is on alert. Officials urge citizens to stay cautious, avoid large gatherings, wear masks in crowded places, and maintain good hygiene. Complacency, they warn, could lead to wider outbreaks.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and may issue new guidelines if the trend persists or worsens in the coming weeks.
