India’s match against Bangladesh was rather one-sided but it remained thrilling nevertheless as the question remained whether batsman Kohli would be able to cross the 100-run mark. India required 8 to win and so did Kohli to get to 100. Bangladesh pacer Hasun Mahmud conceded an above-the-head wide at this moment that had increased everyone’s heart-rate. Kohli however ran the next 5 runs and was on strike for the next over. Bangladesh spinner Nasum Ahmed bowled yet another wide but umpire Richard Kettleborough decided not to call it much to the applause of the crowd. Kohli smashed the next ball for six to get to his 100 and take India home.
The decision was however not well received by everyone. Whereas some were of the opinion that intentionally bowling a wide under such circumstances was not sportsman-like behaviour and hence the umpire was justified in his call other’s felt that this conduct was not professional at such an important event on an international stage.
“Happy for Kohli. Just one more to equal the great Sachin Tendulkar. Once the celebrations over his achievement settle down, let's remember we just saw an international umpire at a world cup, no less, not call a clear wide to allow Kohli to get to a hundred. That's shameful,” independent journalist Parth MN stated on X. Earlier Virender Sehwag, Evin Lewis and James Vince have been denied a century by such means.
