  • Pakistan faced their third consecutive loss in the tournament against Afghanistan
  • Wasim Akram made claims of favouritism within the body
  • Over the last eight months not a single cricketing camp was organised by the National Coaching Centre: Akram

Pakistan faced their third consecutive loss in the World Cup tournament against Afghanistan who registered their first ever win against the country in the Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Afghanistan played with 4 spinners and did not allow the Pakistani batsmen to freely express themselves throughout the innings after having lost the toss. They had an aggressive approach throughout their chase of 283 never letting the Pakistani bowlers settle on a line and length. Their clinical chase has left many questions among Pakistan fans considering that they were touted as one of the prospective semi finalists by many experts before the start of the tournament.

Former Pakistani all rounder Wasim Akram lashed out at the PCB Chairman after the game in a media interaction with A Sports. He made claims of favouritism within the body. He also hinted at foreign interests having a say in the functioning of the organisation. He pointed to an overhaul of pre existing systems such as the High Performance Centre being replaced by the National Coaching Centre. He claimed that over the last eight months not a single cricketing camp was organised by the National Coaching Centre. He alleged that careerism being a priority over cricket was the cause for these changes. He also highlighted that fitness tests have not been conducted on the players for over 2 years. He lamented at the semi final prospects now being dependent on the results of matches that do not involve Pakistan.
