Cybercrime is booming in India, with online scammers netting crores of rupees through sophisticated parcel delivery frauds. According to recent reports, a massive increase in cyber fraud cases has been recorded: from 6,669 cases involving Rs 277 crore in 2022 to a staggering 29,082 cases, amounting to Rs 1,457 crore, in 2023-24.

The new tactic revolves around exploiting the name of Indian Post, with fraudsters impersonating officials and sending fake messages about parcel delivery delays. After previous FedEx-related scams, this approach has become the latest method of deception. Victims receive text messages or calls claiming their parcel is stuck and urgent action is needed to update their address within 12-24 hours.
When recipients click on the provided link, they are directed to a counterfeit Indian Post website designed to harvest personal and financial information. Victims are often unaware that their bank accounts are being compromised as soon as they provide these details.
Authorities warn that responding to SMS or links without verifying authenticity can result in devastating financial losses. The use of SMS and fake delivery updates is a key element of this cyber fraud wave, designed to create urgency and panic.
In light of the alarming rise in cases, cybersecurity experts are urging the public to stay alert, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never share sensitive details like banking credentials online. Cybercrime agencies are working to track and curb such activities, but public vigilance is critical.
