Cow bovine figurines had parallels in Egypt
An excavation of a site containing a prehistoric tomb constructed from stone near Moodbidri in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka has unveiled figurines of 2 cow bovines, a female deity, 2 peacocks, a horse, the hand of the female deity and another object whose identity remains to be ascertained. The figurines are estimated to belong to a period between 800- 700 BC. The figurines were made of Terracotta. The site is located near the Jain Centre in Mudukonaje.
Murugeshi, T, a retired associate professor of Ancient History and Archeology was involved in the excavation. He posted about the findings on his Instagram profile as well.
“It was the biggest megalithic dolmen site which consisted of nine dolmens on the slope of a stone hill. But only two dolmens are intact and the rest of the burials are ruined. It was the first time in India cow bovines were found in the dolmens and it will determine the chronology of the dolmens. Terracottas found in the megalithic burial provide a solid ground for studying the Bhoota cult or Daiva Aradhane of coastal Karnataka. Cow bovine or cow goddess had its parallels in Malampuzha Megalithic terracotta figurines of Kerala and also Egypt,” he stated in an interaction with the New Indian Express.
