The Delhi Police have arrested 4 individuals in the spread of a deep fake video of actress Rashmika Mandanna. They have however clarified that the 4 accused merely uploaded the video and did not have a role in the creation of it. Efforts to identify the main perpetrator of the incident are still underway.
The investigations in this case have been underway for more than a month. On November 24th, social media sites had informed the police that they were not in a position to disclose information pertaining to those who used their platforms to spread the video. This was after the Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw sent notices to these companies. By the time the video became viral, the accounts behind its spread were either deactivated or removed. The use of the Virtual Private Networks in such tasks makes the identification of them even harder. GoDaddy and Meta are the suspected sites wherein this video emerged. The Delhi Police IFSO (Internet Freedom and Safety for Online Users) unit even wrote a letter to Meta but did not receive a positive response.
Earlier Rashmika Mandana’s photos were morphed with British Actress Zara Patel. This caused concerns for safety for women online.
