  • Competition for getting medical seats becomes tougher
  • There are 11,745 medical seats available in Karnataka
  • There are 70 medical colleges in Karnataka

The competition for getting medical seats has only become tougher and competitive this time because of many students performing very well and getting good scores in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

According to data, the number of students at an all-India level with more than 700 marks has gone up from 99 in the last year to 145 this year and the number of students with over 650 marks has increased to 7,000 this year from around 4,700 in the last year.

According to the National Medical Commission, in the current academic year, Karnataka has the highest number of medical colleges in the country only next to Tamil Nadu. There are 70 medical colleges in Karnataka, while Tamil Nadu has 74 colleges.

Other states that have good number of medical colleges include Uttar Pradesh with 68 colleges, Maharashtra with 67 colleges and Telangana with 56 colleges.

This year, there are 11,745 medical seats available in Karnataka, of which 2,934 fall under All India Quota, while 8,600 seats will be available through Karnataka Examinations Authority counselling.

If the NRI quota medical seats go vacant, they will be added to management quota seats.

The competition this year for medical seats is so high that, for instance, a student with 565 marks in the last year would have got a government college seat, but a student with same score this year may get seat only in a private college.
