Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle gold medal match after failing to meet the required weight limit, despite securing victories against Yui Susaki, Oksana Livach, and Yusneylys Guzman Lopez. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the decision, rejecting Phogat's appeal against the disqualification.

The disqualification occurred after Phogat failed to make weight on the second day of the competition, a violation of the United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, which mandate complete disqualification for athletes who do not meet the weight requirements. Despite acknowledging the severity of the consequences, CAS emphasized that it is ultimately the athlete's responsibility to stay within the prescribed weight limit.
In its ruling, CAS described the disqualification as "draconian" but stated that the regulations were clear, leaving no room for leniency. The decision underscores the stringent nature of weight regulations in wrestling, where any failure to comply results in immediate and full disqualification.
Phogat's disqualification has been a significant setback for the Indian wrestling team, as she was a strong contender for the gold medal. The case highlights the critical importance of athletes maintaining weight discipline in competitive sports, as the consequences of failing to do so can be severe and irreversible.
