In a jaw-dropping performance at the World Team Blitz Chess Championships held in London, 19-year-old Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh defeated the reigning women’s world No.1, Hou Yifan of China, during the second leg of the Blitz semifinals. The intense match lasted 74 moves, with Divya maintaining strategic dominance and sharp calculation to force the former Women’s World Champion into resignation.

Divya, representing the Indian team Hexamind Chess Club, proved herself to be one of the key contributors in both Blitz and Rapid segments of the tournament. Her efforts helped her team secure three medals, a bronze in Blitz, silver in Rapid, and an individual bronze on board 6. Her Blitz performance stood out in particular, achieving a remarkable performance rating of over 2600, a feat rarely seen at her age and experience level.
The young Nagpur-based player’s victory over Hou Yifan, widely considered one of the greatest female chess players of all time, sent ripples through the global chess community. Leaders and fans across India celebrated her achievement.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised her mental strength and determination, calling her a source of inspiration for the country’s youth. Similar commendations were made by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
