Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the Bengaluru steel flyover project, stating that its non-implementation has worsened traffic congestion in the city. Originally planned to connect Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal, the project was abandoned in 2017 following public protests and environmental concerns.

Shivakumar argued that if the flyover had been constructed, it would have eased congestion, particularly on key routes leading to Kempegowda International Airport. He pointed out that Bengaluru’s traffic problems have only intensified since the project was scrapped, making daily commutes more difficult for residents.
In response to the growing congestion, the government is now considering alternative infrastructure projects, such as tunnel roads, elevated corridors, and double-decker flyovers. Shivakumar emphasized that these initiatives aim to improve urban mobility and provide long-term solutions for Bengaluru’s expanding traffic demands.
His remarks have reignited debates on balancing infrastructure development with environmental sustainability. While some argue that large-scale projects are essential for a growing metropolis, others remain cautious about their ecological impact and long-term feasibility. As Bengaluru continues to expand, the challenge remains to find transport solutions that effectively address congestion while considering public concerns and environmental responsibility.
