The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that 25% of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases occurred during periods of high temperature. A study conducted in Kuwait noted that most of the deaths occurred when the temperature was between 35 degree Celsius to 42.7 degree Celsius.
When the external temperature is more than that of the body, the heart has to pump faster in order to radiate heat for regulating its temperature. It is said that 2-4 times of the regular amounts of blood is pumped when the external temperature is high.
Beta blockers that slow the heartbeat and Diuretics which increase urine output resulting in dehydration are potential risks during high temperatures.
Tips
Some of the measures which individuals can take to beat the heat are given below
- Be constantly updated about the weather and try to stay indoors when the temperature peaks.
- Stay hydrated. A consumption limit of about 100 ml every hour is advisable. The limit could vary for those with already identified heart ailments and diuretics.
- Soda and fruit juice could deter the process of flow of water from the digestive system into the circulatory system. Alcohol has also been identified as a potential risk although the cause for the same is yet to be thoroughly determined.
- Applying sunscreen to protect the skin is helpful as the skin is an important avenue for the release of heat.
