  • Nandamuri Balakrishna pushed Anjali on stage
  • There was widespread outrage on the internet
  • Society itself refuses to hold men in power accountable: Chinmayi

A video of Tollywood actor Nandamuri Balakrishna pushing Kollywood actress Anjali on stage during a promotional event held by the team helming the Gangs of Godavari project became viral on the internet. Although Anjali was seen laughing it off, there was widespread outrage on the internet over the incident. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada who is vocal about her opinion especially in matters pertaining to treatment of women in the film industry gave her 2 cents on the issue. “One of the biggest problems that I notice from people sharing this “Look at her laughing. She should have _____.” It is NOT possible to respond according to your spectator response as you watch this on your device. This most moral policing, holier than thou - pure as driven snow - Harishchandra /Sri Ramachandramoorthy or their relative incarnates will fail to understand,” she stated in a post on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Chinmayi had earlier made allegations of sexual misconduct against lyricist Vairamuthu. She highlighted the power relations at play when such incidents take place. “Society itself refuses to hold men in power who misbehave accountable; Especially when they come from money, caste and political power. Don't come and tell women what to say and how to behave when you have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” Chinmayi added.
