  • Afghanistan can aim to reach the semi final
  • Australia has better NRR than Afghanistan
  • It wasn't an easy wicket: Marsh

Afghanistan’s unexpected win against Australia in group 1 of the super eights stage of the 2024 ICC T-20 World Cup has opened up an array of possibilities as far as the final standings is concerned. Afghanistan can aim to reach the semi final stage of the tournament based on the outcome of the match between India and Australia scheduled on 24th June. “Do not disrespect Afghanistan by calling this an upset. Afghanistan are good enough to beat any team on their day. They played to their potential today and defeated a very good Aus team. A fact that should be celebrated. Congratulations and well-played Afghanistan,” former Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer stated in a post on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).

Australia would however be keen on securing a win against India as that increases their chances of qualification on the basis of superior net run rate. The Australian all-rounder talked about whether the toss had a bearing on the result of the game. “A lot of teams have bowled first at this World Cup to get an idea of the surface. Don't think we lost at the toss. It was an off-night for us in the field, and we own that. We'll be back next game. It wasn't an easy wicket, but both teams played on this surface,” Marsh said.
