EaseMyTrip, a homegrown, made in India online travel booking company which claims to be the second largest travel portal in India with a turnaround of Rs 8000 crore in the year 2023 has decided to end bookings for Maldives amidst a controversy surrounding supposedly derogatory comments made by political leaders in Maldives on India’s tourism prospects.

Prashant Pitti, co-founder of EaseMyTrip offered an explanation for this decision. “Based on the trends circulating on social media and statements we have been recipients to from the representatives of the Government of Maldives, we have decided that we will not accept any bookings for Maldives. 3 lakh tourists visit Maldives from India on an annual basis. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has demonstrated that we have locations which are better than Maldives. We have ourselves paid a visit to the Lakshadweep islands. We are planning to make another trip to the Lakshadweep islands as well. We request other airlines to establish direct connectivity to Lakshadweep  from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. We have made available 5 packages this time around. Apart from Lakshadweep we also vouch for Ayodhya to become an international destination. We request other travel portals to assist us in this initiative. We must think about our country ahead of our business,” Prashant Pitti stated in a video that has become viral on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
