  • SSR provides an opportunity to newly eligible citizens and left out citizens to enrol as voters
  • Two announcements are being made in poll bound states
  • Jairam Ramesh flagged the move a violation of code of conduct

The Election Commission of India (ECI) decided to improve voter awareness by in-flight announcements about opportunities to enrol oneself in the voter list. “The Special Summary Revision (SSR) provides an opportunity to newly eligible citizens and left out citizens to enrol as voters by filing Form-6. Further, Elections to the Legislative Assembly in five States viz. 1.Chhattisgarh 2.Rajasthan 3.Madhya Pradesh 4.Telangana 5.Mizoram are scheduled in the month of November 2023. In this regard, I am directed to invite the Ministry of Civil Aviation to join ECI in the endeavour of registration of new voters across the country and maximum participation of voters in the upcoming Legislative Assembly Elections in five States by including voter awareness messages as in-flight announcements by air hostesses. It is desired that SSR message is announced all over India and appeal to cast vote is announced in the flights landing in the poll bound States as mentioned above at least twice,” it mentioned in a letter to the Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Former Environment Minister from the Indian National Congress, Jairam Ramesh however flagged this move as a violation of the code of conduct. “Last week, I took flights to Aizawl and back to Delhi on Indigo. Both ways there was an announcement by the cabin crew that hailed the Prime Minister 'Shri Narendra Modiji' for something routine and inconsequential. One of these announcements immediately segued into a vote appeal asking passengers to vote during upcoming state elections. Note that there was no mention of the Election Commission in this announcement — a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct,” he posted on X.
