England secured a 5-wicket victory over India in the first Test at Headingley, taking a 1–0 lead in the series after a high-scoring encounter filled with standout performances. England replied with grit, as Ollie Pope struck a composed 106 and Joe Root added 53, helping the hosts post 465, just six runs behind India. In the second innings, India continued to pile on runs. Rishabh Pant, in scintillating form, smashed 118, while KL Rahul contributed a classy 137 as India reached 364 all out, setting England a target of 371.
England’s chase was anchored by a sensational 149 from opener Ben Duckett. His counter-attacking innings took the game away from India, with Root once again steadying the ship with 53. England finished at 374/5, chasing down the target with confidence and composure.
Despite a brave fight by India’s top order, England’s batting depth and attacking intent proved decisive. The teams now head into the second Test with the visitors under pressure to bounce back.
