Actress Navya Nair’s fined Rs 1.14 lakh in Australia for carrying jasmine flowers

Navya Nair was invited to Melbourne by the Victoria Malayali Association as a special guest for Onam festival. Ahead of her journey, her father insisted she take jasmine flowers, considered a traditional and essential part of the celebration. She packed them in her bag while flying out from Kochi. 

Upon arrival in Melbourne, however, Australia’s strict biosecurity rules came into play. Since passengers are required to declare any plant material to prevent pests or diseases, failure to do so attracted a steep fine. Navya was fined ₹1.14 lakh (AUD equivalent) for the oversight.

Navya herself recounted the incident during a cultural event in Australia, describing it as a surprising and unusual experience. She noted how something as simple as carrying jasmine, a symbol of festivity back home, turned into an expensive mistake abroad.
