In a surprising turn, filmmaker Sundar C has officially exited the much-awaited Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan film Thalaivar 173, leaving fans in shock and speculation rife about the project’s future.
In a major development that has sent ripples through the Tamil film industry, director Sundar C has officially announced his exit from the much-hyped Rajinikanth-Kamal Haasan starrer Thalaivar 173. The filmmaker issued a heartfelt statement on November 13, confirming that he would no longer be directing the project due to “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances.”
The announcement comes just days after the film was officially revealed on November 5, sparking massive excitement among fans. Reports had earlier suggested that the movie could mark Rajinikanth’s swansong, making it one of the most talked-about collaborations in Indian cinema.

In his statement, Sundar C expressed deep gratitude for being part of such a “prestigious project,” calling it a “dream come true.” He wrote, “This venture, featuring the legendary Superstar Thiru. Rajinikanth Avl and to be produced by the illustrious Ulaganayagan Thiru. Kamal Haasan Avl, was indeed a dream come true for me.”

Reflecting on his decision, the director added that sometimes life forces one to take a different path, even when it diverges from one’s dreams. He emphasized his respect and admiration for both actors, saying he would “continue to seek their inspiration and wisdom.”
Despite stepping down officially, Sundar C assured that he would still extend his “guidance” to the film’s team and remain supportive of the project. He also apologized to fans for disappointing them and promised to continue delivering engaging entertainment in the future.
Neither Rajinikanth nor Kamal Haasan has issued a public response yet. The highly anticipated film is scheduled for release during Pongal 2027, and fans are now eagerly awaiting an update on who will take over the director’s chair.
