The legendary actor, long admired as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” died in Mumbai after struggling with age-related complications and severe breathing distress.

Bollywood has lost one of its most enduring screen icons, as veteran actor Dharmendra has died at the age of 89 after a prolonged struggle with age-related disorders. The actor, who was born on December 8, 1935, in Phagwara, Punjab, had been facing persistent health complications in recent years.

Dharmendra was taken to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after his breathing suddenly deteriorated. Medical teams kept him under close observation as his respiratory condition remained serious. Despite efforts to stabilise him, his health continued to decline, leading to his passing.

The actor had been coping with several age-linked ailments for a while, and the latest episode of severe breathing distress forced an emergency admission. Hospital officials monitored his vital functions continuously, but his condition did not improve.

Recognised fondly as Bollywood’s “He-Man,” Dharmendra built a remarkable career covering more than six decades and appearing in over 300 films. His body of work includes some of Hindi cinema’s most beloved films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Dharam Veer. His performances, often marked by warmth, humour, and strength, helped define entire eras of Indian filmmaking.

Even in his late eighties, Dharmendra remained active in cinema. One of his recent appearances was in “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani” (2023), which received widespread appreciation for his emotional portrayal. He was also part of the upcoming film “Ikkis”, featuring Agastya Nanda, scheduled for a December 25 release.

Dharmendra’s family, including actors Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, had been with him throughout the hospitalisation. Earlier updates shared by his daughter Esha Deol had asked fans to remain calm when he was reported to be in critical but stable condition.
