In a dramatic turn of events, the IPL 2025 auction has already ignited intense discussions even before it begins. The latest controversy erupted at a meeting held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, where franchise owners convened to discuss the upcoming season. The spotlight fell on a heated exchange between Kolkata Knight Riders owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia.

The core of the dispute revolved around the contentious issue of player retention. Several franchise owners, including Wadia, advocated for stricter limits on the number of players that teams can retain. They argued that limiting player retention would foster a more competitive and balanced league. However, Shah Rukh Khan staunchly opposed this proposal, favouring more flexibility for teams to retain their core players.

The argument between Khan and Wadia quickly escalated, drawing attention from other team owners. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kavya Maran voiced her support for Khan's stance, adding another layer to the debate.

Kolkata Knight Riders have officially appealed to the BCCI, urging the board to allow teams greater freedom in retaining players. Conversely, teams like Punjab Kings have stood firm in their opposition, insisting that fewer retained players would be beneficial for the league's overall competitiveness.

As the debate rages on, the BCCI has yet to reach a decision on the matter. The outcome of this discussion could significantly impact the strategies and compositions of IPL teams in the 2025 season.
