Referring to the Rajya Sabha as the House of Elders, Surya highlighted how senior members like Deve Gowda lead by example. In a veiled criticism aimed at certain MPs, he added that those who “wink, disrupt, heckle” and show uninterest in Parliament should take a lesson from Gowda’s commitment.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 was passed by the Rajya Sabha in the early hours of Friday following a heated 12-hour debate that began Thursday afternoon. The bill received 128 votes in favor and 95 against, though Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar noted the numbers were subject to correction.
The Lok Sabha had already cleared the bill on Thursday after a similar extended debate. With approval from both Houses of Parliament, the bill now awaits the President’s assent to become law. Alongside this, the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024 was also passed in the Rajya Sabha through voting.
While the Modi government has defended the legislation, calling it necessary, the opposition has criticized it as unconstitutional and an attack on religious freedom.
