Urban planning and policy experts advocate "30-minute city" model
Model ensures most daily necessities are accessible within a 30-minute radius
This model offers a promising solution to rectify urban challenges
To alleviate congestion in Bengaluru, experts in urban planning and policy are advocating the adoption of the “30-minute city” model.
This innovative approach entails ensuring that most daily necessities are accessible within a 30-minute driving radius from one’s residence, whether by walking, cycling, public transportation, or other means.
The primary objective is to boost physical activity, reduce dependency on automobiles, enhance social cohesion, and stimulate economic growth. By decentralizing governance and establishing accessible amenities, Bengaluru can effectively address its urban challenges and enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
These recommendations are part of a recent comprehensive report titled “Karnataka’s Decade: Roadmap to a $1 Trillion Economy.”
This report, jointly prepared by the Department of Planning, Programme Monitoring, and Statistics and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), aims to chart a path for Karnataka to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2033.
The report also underscores the significance of walkable neighborhoods, bike-friendly environments, and well-connected transit options in empowering local communities.
The rapid urbanization and economic expansion have led to unplanned development throughout the city, adversely affecting the well-being of its residents and the environment.
Although Bengaluru prides itself as a global leader in innovation, the quality of life within the city remains subpar.
The “30-minute city” concept, gaining traction worldwide, offers a promising solution to rectify these urban challenges and ensure the accessibility of essential services within a 30-minute reach for every citizen in their local neighbourhood.
