A rare but alarming incident in Denmark has raised serious health concerns over the consumption of expired natural beverages. A 69-year-old man died within 26 hours of drinking spoiled coconut water, according to a case report published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal.

The man consumed coconut water that had been stored for several days and noted an unpleasant taste immediately. Despite taking only a few sips through a straw, he began experiencing severe symptoms including dizziness, vomiting, profuse sweating, and loss of balance.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where an MRI scan revealed a brain abscess. Despite medical intervention and treatment for metabolic dysfunction, he succumbed to the infection within a day. Doctors confirmed that the brain infection was triggered by consuming the spoiled coconut water.

Experts warn that natural substances, even when consumed in small quantities, can become dangerous if they are past their prime. Spoiled coconut water, especially if slimy or foul-smelling, should never be consumed. Once opened or washed, coconut water must be refrigerated and consumed within three to five hours to minimize risk.

This rare but fatal case underscores the importance of food safety, even with seemingly harmless natural drinks. Doctors urge the public to exercise caution and discard any coconut water that shows signs of spoilage.
