In a progressive shift towards a passwordless digital future, Facebook has unveiled passkeys, a new, secure login method for Android and iOS users. This innovation allows users to access their accounts using their device’s built-in biometric tools or PIN, eliminating the need to remember or enter passwords.

Built on the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) framework, passkeys offer a more secure and convenient alternative to traditional login methods. Users can now sign in to Facebook by simply unlocking their device using a fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN code. Importantly, all authentication data remains stored locally on the user’s device, ensuring privacy and protection from external threats like phishing or credential theft. Facebook itself does not receive or store any biometric information.
Currently, the feature is available through the Facebook mobile app, with plans underway to roll it out to Messenger in the near future. Future enhancements are also expected to integrate passkeys into Meta Pay, enabling secure access to payment tools and encrypted chat backups.
To enable this functionality, users can visit the Accounts Centre within the Facebook app or opt in during login when prompted. The passkey is automatically labeled using the user’s verified email address or phone number, once set, this name cannot be changed even if contact details are updated.
At this time, the feature is exclusive to mobile platforms, with desktop and web browser compatibility expected in future updates. For users on unsupported devices, the traditional password-based login will continue to be available as a backup.
This move underscores Meta’s commitment to enhancing security while offering a streamlined user experience, setting the stage for broader adoption of biometric-based authentication across its platforms.
