This conversation began when the first trailer of "Kalki 2898 AD" was screened at San Diego Comic-Con last year. Some fans immediately noted the desert settings and claimed that "Kalki 2898 AD" was a "cheap copy" of "Dune."
Director Nag Ashwin addressed these comparisons in an interview, stating, "It’s because of the sand. Basically, whenever there’s sand, it’ll look like Dune."
As the June 27th release date approaches, reddit users continue to debate the similarities. One user commented, "The similarities are endless, and that's the thing: when there's so much sci-fi material and so many written stories, you're bound to find similarities. It seems like 'Kalki 2898 AD' actually used a real source: the Kalki Purana. People can have a pseudo-intellectual moment by bringing up 'Mad Max,' but the truth remains that 'Kalki 2898 AD' is mostly mythologically inspired."
Another user responded, "This is what is exactly wrong with Indian Cinema, the movie is not out yet, people are slinging mud both ways. Being a copy isn't a bad thing in itself, being a copy that's so blatantly bad and worse than the inspiration is what's bad, which you cannot judge because the movie is not out. All this calling a movie a copy and then people defending it before the movie is even out is so cringe, signifies what's actually wrong with Indian entertainment consumers.
Indian films are subjected to these comparisons, even with the presence of almost similar visuals.
The debate surrounding Kalki 2898 AD highlights the complexities of modern filmmaking, where originality is often scrutinized. Whether Kalki 2898 AD stands as a unique contribution to the sci-fi genre or draws too heavily from its predecessors will soon be revealed.
